Homestar Run!

2 min read
When I booted up the Wii last week I got a pleasant surprise.  My bro sent me a game through the online store.  It was Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People (But You Can Play It Too!), a short point-n-click adventure game starring the main cast of homestarrunner.com.  Beginning as a bigger, better version of the Strong Bad E-Mail series, you guide the titular character on a quest to ruin everyone's day.  Very funny, very fun.  The game far exceeds its ten-dollar pricetag.

I bought a Nerf gun at the store this past weekend.  It was around eight bucks and the thing seemed so absurd as a kid's toy I just needed it.  The it in question being a six shooter.  There's a button to release the chamber for reloading, a hammer to pull back, and sights on top of the gun.  Every shot sticks like honey if the surface is flat enough.  It can even rapid-fire like in those old Westerns where the hero would shoot down the noose at his buddy's execution.  Very cool.  I'm not being immature.  Shut up.

I might get some writing done in addition to reading.  Fiction mainly.  Creative truths are the best kind after all.

Happy Fourth!

I've been to Florida for the past two weeks.  Saw family, went to theme parks, etc.  It was fun.  Life got back to normal almost immediately after I got home, except with a tan and sunburn-shedding.  Don't know what I'm doing for the holiday.  Didn't get fireworks because we didn't have time.  Might not barbecue because of rain.  Maybe I can go through more junk mail?  Yeah, that's the ticket.

So, Silent Hill.  I liked it but at the same time ran into some problems.  What is the motivation for me as a player to continue into town?  At any point in the early parts you could just turn around and walk all the way through the cemetery and back to your car.  I actually did that once and kept hitting spacebar to just drive home.  The character's motivation of self-punishment is entirely understandable but that should be explained earlier on.  It's very apparent that there is no wife worth finding pretty much seconds in.  Hell, at least wait for the fog to blow over.

And then you have a supporting cast of contradictions.  Oh look, Maria is getting mauled by Pyramid Head. :( Oh look, Maria is on the other side of that gate unharmed! :)  Oh look, she's dead again. :(   Oh look, she's crying for help, again unharmed! :)  Oh look, those danged Pyramid twins got her. :(  Oh look, there she is again, completely unharmed! :)  Oh no, she's really evil.  I totally did not see that coming. :(  Silly James.

I wish I could hate that little girl Laura to death.  She's innocent enough to not see any monsters but then is able to set up traps for me that depend on her knowing they exist.  That's just wrong.

--------------

I saw the local chorus today.  They weren't bad, but they weren't good either.  Just fair.  Most of the songs were borrowed from movies, plays, and church.  It's all volunteers, and all were at least 45.  The performance and food were free, so I can't complain too much.
